Mozy will not be able to trace the IP address of the stolen computer if you install Mozy on another computer. Also, an IP trace is not possible if the computer thief does not use your computer to allow a backup to run. If there are no backups after the theft Mozy will not be able to trace the computer to an IP address. Fortunately most computer thieves steal a computer to use it so if your stolen computer is turned on and used after being stolen it is quite possible Mozy can help you trace the IP address of the thief.
For Mozy to be able to help you trace your stolen computer equipment you will need to contact your local police and have them create a police report. Once that is done contact Mozy support asking them to perform an IP trace. You will need the police station to fax the Police Report requesting the IP trace to Mozy. The IP trace request must be addressed to the Mozy Support Specialist assigned to your support case. It is important to note that the results of an IP trace can only be released to the investigating police officer of your police report. You will receive a notification on your Mozy support case when the report is sent to the police officer in charge of your case.
Once the Police have been notified of the IP address of your computer they will be able to trace the IP address to a specific address and user with help from the appropriate ISP. Hopefully with that information the police will be able to recover your computer hardware from the thief. While you are waiting for that to happen it is also a good idea to restore your data via the Mozy web interface using another computer you have access to and store that data in a safe place.
